Today, I encountered a problem with my media uploader in wordpress (2.9.2).

Wordpress simply would not show the flash uploader for uploading multiple files to the media library. Only the message “You are using the browser uploader” was shown. When the flash uploader is enabled you are given the choice of using the browser uploader instead, for some unknown reason the message “try the flash uploader instead” was not shown.

The simple fix is to add ?flash=1 to the address bar like this:

http://yourblog.com/wp-admin/media-new.php?flash=1

If you want to force the use of flash uploader while editing pages (e.g. not when adding media to the media library) you can not simply add ?flash=1 to the URL since a modal-window is used. However a dirty fix is this:

Add this line to the top of /wp-admin/media-upload.php:
$_GET['flash'] = ‘1′;

If you get the red HTTP-error message after uploading with the flash uploader, you need to put this in your .htaccess-file;

<ifmodule mod_security.c>
<files async-upload.php>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</files>
</ifmodule>

Oddly, wordpress stated showing the before mentioned “try the flash uploader instead” message on my pages after playing around with this.

Q: Should i bring my own wet-suit for water sports?
A: Nah, the water is so hot that you will not need any.

Q: Do I need a new cell phone and how about the service and SIM-card?
A: Any GSM cell phone will work. The easiest and cheapest thing to do is to buy a new SIM-card and add credits as you go (Top Up-service) . A company called Digicel provides this service, and you can buy Top Up credits nearly everywhere. Remember that your phone cannot be SIM-locked and that you will get a new local number. Also, remember to bring an adapter for your power chrager. Read more about the subject here.

Q: What kind of power plugs do they use n Barbados?
A: 115V, 50 Hz. North American plugs will get you powered! See picture below (see http://www.adaptelec.com/ for more)

Q: Can I use my Mastercard/Visa card in Barbados?
A: Yes, you can withdraw cash in any bank and even some gas stations. They take any major card type. I encourage you to have at least two cards in case one fails or you reach the monthly withdrawal limit – it happened to me. Remember Barbados is expensive.

Feel free to ask questions in the comments below.

Steps to take in order to arrange an elective at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of the West Indies:

Find the courses you would like to take. See the list of undergrad courses offered on this site (opens in new window) . Look under the the “Phase II” headline for the clinical rotations.

Email the elective-secretary and ask if you there is room on the desired course/rotation in the weeks that suit you. Her name is Pamela Alleyne and her email is palleyne@uwichill.edu.bb
UPDATE – N.B.! You now need to send along your CV showing that you have or will have experience in the medical fields you apply for.

Receive an acceptance letter, immunization record, and information document via email.

Pay the intuition fee of 50 USD by sending an international check (ask your bank to make one) along with your immunization record.
The university must receive this at least 3 months before you start the elective.
For the immunization record you need test results and your doctors signature proving the following (also listed in the email you receive):

HEPATITIS B: Students should be immune to Hepatitis B, either as a result of vaccination or following natural infection.

MRSA Screen (must be done 4 weeks before your elective commences) with a copy of Nasal, Axilla and Groin Swab results.

RUBELLA: Students must be immune to rubella

VARICELLA (Chickenpox): Students must know their immune status

RECENT TETANUS (Within last 10 years)

Not have/have had any of the following: Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis

Receive confirmation email.

Arrange accommodation.

Get on the jet!

In order to get the ECTS-points transferred to your home medical school, you will probably need descriptions of the courses. They can be found in the “Syllabus and Course Outlines on the MBBS Programme” pdf.

Good luck!

UPDATE: Not yet tested with mootools 1.2.3.!

All right, here is an updated version of the hip multibox 1.3.1 script that will work with mootools 1.2.2.

The multibox is a lightbox clone that’ll display a variety of file types. It was originally created by Samuel Birch from phatfusion.net. Howerver, till this day (June 2009), it has not been updated after the release of mootools 1.1.1.

Even though I’m surfin’, chillin’ and having a good time taking my medical electives here in Barbados, I’ve spent a little time modifying the script with the surgesstions found on the phatfusion blog and Di Lella’s blog. Furthermore, I’ve corrected a few bugs with the overlay.js not fading in, and the HTML element horizontal size messing up…

Here are the files for the taking:
multibox.js
overlay.js

All work is of cause still under the MIT license.

Tested in FF 3.0.11 and IE 8.06. Please let me know if you find any bugs or have any comments.

P.S.: While looking for mootools based modal-box’ed media viewers I stumbled upon mediaboxadvanced which also looks very promising indeed. Go check it out as well…
